Memorial Day, 2010
Das spoke at the Veterans Memorial Building, Santa Barbara, Memorial Day 2010. “The characteristic that wins a war is the same characteristic that makes a society work, and that’s self-sacrifice.”
He said that although his Opa (grandfather) had to sit out the majority of World War II, the greatest lesson Rene Diets passed on to his family was that little bits of self-sacrifice and dedication to something larger than oneself is what ties together the fabric of U.S. society. Rene and his wife Mary are still with us, today, living in Ojai since the 1950s.
